Top Places to Visit in Kodaikanal Tamilnadu

We chose to celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary in Kodaikanal. It was peak summer, and the heat in the city was becoming unbearable. We wanted a peaceful break, somewhere calm and refreshing. That is when we decided on Kodaikanal, a hill station known for its cool weather and quiet surroundings.

We travelled in April. To be honest, it was not as cold during the daytime as we had expected. The afternoons were pleasant but slightly warm. However, the early mornings and nights were beautifully chilly. The cool breeze, light mist, and calm silence made everything feel special.

We stayed at Western Valley Resorts, a small resort located on a hillside. It was peaceful, clean, and very accommodating. What I loved most about the resort was the wooden coffee sit-out area built on the terrace. Most of my time was spent there. With a hot cup of coffee in my hand, I would sit and enjoy the scenic valley view. The misty mornings were my favourite. Watching the clouds slowly move across the hills felt magical. Whenever we were not out exploring, that terrace became my favourite place to relax. We also went on long walks around the property, enjoying the cool air and quiet surroundings.

Western Valley Resort Kodaikanal

We chose Kodaikanal because it is one of the most popular hill stations in Tamil Nadu. It is located about 7,000 feet above sea level in the Palani Hills. Because of this height, the weather is usually cool and pleasant.

Even old Sangam literature has mentioned this mountain region, which shows that this place has been admired for many centuries. Kodaikanal is the kind of place you visit when you want a break from busy city life.

You can go boating, cycling, trekking, or simply walk through forests and enjoy nature. Another special thing about Kodaikanal is the Kurinji flower, which blooms only once every twelve years and covers the hills in purple during its season.

Famous Kodaikanal Lake

Kodaikanal Lake Kodai Lake

Kodaikanal Lake is the main attraction of the town. So our sightseeing started form there. It is a star-shaped artificial lake created in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge, the Collector of Madurai. The lake spreads across about 60 acres and is surrounded by a five-kilometer road.

We spent time boating here and also walked around the lake. Many people rent bicycles and ride around the lake road. Pony rides are also available. The area is lively and full of activity, especially in the evening.

Coaker’s Walk

Coakers Walk Kodaikanal Tamilnadu

One of the most relaxing places we visited was Coaker’s Walk. It is a simple one-kilometer walking path built along the edge of a hill. The walk is not very long, but the experience feels special. We slowly walked along the pathway, enjoying the cool breeze and the wide view of the valley below. It was not crowded when we went, so we could take our time and just enjoy the moment.

The feeling there was different. It was calm and peaceful. The clouds kept moving, sometimes covering the valley and sometimes clearing up again. We also heard that this place got its name. It was constructed by Lieutenant Coaker during the British period. It is said that he built this path for his morning walks. Knowing that small history made the walk feel even more interesting.

From here, you can see valleys, hills, and on clear days even parts of Madurai city. The path is fenced for safety and is located close to the bus stand and Kodaikanal Lake.

The Pine Forest & Guna Caves

Pine Forest Kodaikanala

After that, we moved to the Pine Forest and Guna Caves. The Pine Forest was very beautiful and calm. Tall pine trees were standing close to each other, and the ground was fully covered with dry leaves. Sunlight was passing through the trees, which made the place look almost like a movie scene. We walked slowly through the forest, took a few pictures, and just enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere.

From there, we went to Guna Caves. If you have seen the movie Guna, you will definitely recognize this place. Originally, this place was called Devil’s Kitchen. But after the movie Guna starring Kamal Haasan was shot here, it became widely known as Guna Caves. The name stayed, and even today most people call it Guna Caves.

Pine Forest Kodaikanal

The same place became famous again in 2024 because of the Malayalam movie Manjummel Boys. In that movie, a group of friends goes on a trip, and unfortunately, one of them falls into the caves. Locals and police in the movie say that it is almost impossible to rescue him, as nobody had come out alive from those deep caves in the last 100 years. But in the end, his friend manages to rescue him alive. The interesting thing is that this story is based on a true incident. After the release of Manjummel Boys, Guna Caves once again became very popular, and many people started visiting the place out of curiosity.

Guna Caves or Devils Kitchen Kodaikanal

When we visited, entry inside the deep cave areas was restricted for safety reasons. We could only see the place from a protected viewpoint. The deep cracks between the rocks looked scary and mysterious. After hearing all these stories, standing there felt even more thrilling. It is not just a sightseeing spot, but a place filled with cinema history and real-life stories.

Chettiar Park is located on the way to Kurinji Andavar Temple. It is a small and well-maintained park with colorful flowers and neatly trimmed bushes. It is known for the Kurinji flowers that bloom once every twelve years. The park is calm and less crowded, making it suitable for a relaxed visit.

Dolphin’s nose

dolphin's Nose Kodaikanal

Visiting Dolphin’s Nose was a real adventure for us. To reach the main point, which looks like the nose of a dolphin, we had to trek for about one to one and a half hours. The path goes through a forest route, and some parts are narrow and rocky. It is not a simple walk. You need patience and a little courage.

While we were trekking, it suddenly started showering lightly. The rain made the path a little slippery, and honestly, I was scared at that moment. Walking through the forest with light rain falling and mist around us felt both exciting and frightening. But we continued slowly.

Finally, when we reached the main viewpoint, it was all worth it. The view was simply amazing. Because of the rain, the climate was cool and slightly foggy. The valley below looked beautiful and dramatic. The fresh air and the mist made the whole place feel magical. Unfortunately, our camera battery was dead at that exact time. We could not take many pictures, which was really disappointing. But sometimes, I feel some moments are better enjoyed with our own eyes rather than through a camera.

Even though I was scared during the trek, it became one of the most memorable parts of our Kodaikanal trip.

Poombarai Village

Poombarai Village view Kodaikanal Tamilnadu

We visited Poombarai, which is about 18 kilometers from Kodaikanal town. The drive to Poombarai itself was very scenic. The road had sharp turns, mountain views, and lush greenery on both sides. On the way, we stopped at a viewpoint from where we could see a wide view of Palani town down below, surrounded by hills. That panoramic view was really beautiful and worth stopping for.

When we reached Poombarai, the first thing we noticed was the terraced farms spread across the hills. The farming fields were arranged step by step along the slopes, which looked very neat and unique. The village has traditional houses and a simple rural atmosphere. Walking through the small streets, we could see how peaceful life is there compared to the busy town of Kodaikanal. It felt calm and quiet.

We also visited the Mahalakshmi Temple in Poombarai, which is located in a peaceful surrounding. After that, we saw the Poombarai Murugan Temple, a well-known temple in the village with traditional South Indian style architecture. The temple is surrounded by greenery and offers nice hill views. Overall, Poombarai gave us a simple village experience, fresh air, and beautiful valley views. It was a good break from regular tourist spots.

Mannavanur Village

Another place we explored was Mannavanur, located around 35 kilometers from Kodaikanal. The drive to Mannavanur was one of the best parts of our trip. The route passes through forests, winding mountain roads, and open grasslands. It is less crowded and feels very peaceful.

Mannavanur is known for its wide meadows and natural beauty. We first visited Mannavanur Lake, which is surrounded by rolling hills and open fields. The lake area was calm and quiet. People can enjoy boating there, including traditional parisal boating in round bamboo boats. It is also a good place for birdwatching and relaxing near the water.

We also saw the Mannavanur Sheep Farm, where many sheep were grazing in the green meadows. It is part of a research center that focuses on sheep breeding. There is also a rabbit farm in the same area, where rabbits are raised and cared for. Seeing these farms in such a large open grassland was something different from usual sightseeing places.

On the way, there is also Kookal Lake, which is another quiet and scenic lake near Mannavanur. The entire area feels like countryside life in the hills. Visiting Mannavanur gave us a peaceful experience and a closer look at rural life surrounded by nature.

Silver Cascade Falls

Silver cascade falls kodaikanal

We stopped at Silver Cascade Falls on our way to Kodaikanal. It is about 8 kilometers before the town, on the Madurai road. Since it is right next to the main road, almost everyone stops there for a quick break.

The waterfall is quite tall, around 180 feet, and the water comes from the overflow of Kodaikanal Lake. When we reached, the water was flowing nicely. We could hear the sound of the falls from a little distance itself. We did not go very close, but we stood at the viewpoint and watched it for some time.

There were a few fruit sellers and small stalls nearby. Many people were taking pictures and enjoying the cool water spray. It is not a place where you spend hours, but it is a good short stop to stretch, refresh, and enjoy the view before moving ahead.
